Teacher’s debut book published

Teachers will be given practical support in a new book co-authored by a member of the profession from Grimsby.

David Goodwin will make his bookshelf debut when Organise Ideas: Thinking by Hand, Extending the Mind, is published in September.

The 36-year-old Healing School geography teacher has written the book with Oliver Caviglioli, a retired special school head teacher who has spent decades researching the science behind teaching.

David contacted Oliver after reading one of his other books.

“I asked some advice and we ended up chatting on and off over a number of months,” he said.

“One night I said, almost joking, we should write a book together and he took me up on it.

“His publisher went for it straight away so I was fortunate not to experience the rejection like so many debut authors.

“Oliver had previously written about the topic 20 years ago. Since then, research has come forward and theories have changed.

“It has worked well. He has done the research whereas I have the hands-on, up-to-date classroom experience.”

The book is about graphic organisers, used in teaching to support students, particularly in reading and writing.

“What is new is how we have gone about presenting it and the research we have brought into it,” said David.

“There’s been research before but it has been contradictory and not practical in supporting teachers with their learning.

“Oliver last published a book two years ago. Strategies we talk about in this were introduced in that book.

“A mind map is one example of more than 35 different organisers that can be used by teachers.

“We show how they can be used to support other learning strategies.

“There has been a lot of movement over the last five to eight years in classroom teaching.”

David went to Tollbar Academy and Leeds Metropolitan University before returning to the area to teach. His has been in the profession 12 years, the last two at Healing.

Married to Marie, they have a nine-year-old daughter Maddison.

“I am always interested in reading books about different methods and seeing what might work for me.

“I know others are the same.

“Hopefully, this new book will interest many in the profession when it comes out in September.

“It has been a huge undertaking over the past 11 months, not just the writing but illustrating every page.

“I did A-level graphics and that came in useful.”

But both authors are happy with the result and it is available now on pre-order with Amazon.

“It is a very practical book. It is not meant to be read from start to finish. Teachers will jump to the different sections.

“The first is the theory. A ‘what’ section explains and illustrates 35 different organisers and when you might use them.

“Then there is a ‘how’ section which looks at constructing an organiser while ‘who’ has 50 teachers from across the world from different subjects and phases and how they use graphic organisers.

“We put it out on Twitter about the book and got a fantastic response.”

As well as the book going on sale, David is looking forward to meeting Oliver face-to-face.

“It is strange that we have not met because of lockdown but, hopefully, we are due to speak together at a conference in September.

“We have developed a real friendship over the phone and internet. But I am definitely Robin to his Batman!

“I would like to thank Principal Mrs Dewland and all of my colleagues at Healing School. The support I have received has made the writing of this book possible.”

Mrs Dewland said the school is committed to evidence-based research to further inform and develop its excellent approach to teaching strategies, and is consistently at the forefront of teaching developments.

“I’d like to offer my congratulations to David on his forthcoming book,” she said.

“He becomes the first published author on our staff team and that is something which Team Healing can be proud of.

“I know the book’s been an enormous challenge but it will inspire many others across the teaching profession around the world. I shall look forward to reading a copy.”
