Poet's Poser To Pupils

Poet Ian McMillan and cartoonist Tony Husband.

Popular poet Ian McMillan set Healing School pupils a challenge - impress your teachers and get the chance to work with him.

The published author, who has appeared on shows such as Have I Got News for You, Countryfile and Coast, returned to Healing on Tuesday (24th June).

The Barnsley wordsmith's voice is also familiar to radio listeners, with his show The Verb on BBC Radio 3 and regular appearances on other stations.

He and well known cartoonist Tony Husband returned to Healing by popular demand, with pupils and staff enjoying previous visits.

Principal Ann Addison said: "Ian's enthusiasm and boundless energy are infectious and rub off on the children and staff.

"We're delighted he's found time in a busy schedule to come back with Tony, who's incredibly talented too.

"But, clearly, they can't meet every pupil so Ian set a challenge. Only those who inspire their teachers in English lessons had the chance to work with him and Tony."

The duo's theme was 'how to make a book in a day'.

Tony illustrated Ian's book Daft Yorkshire Fairy Tales. In it, the poet re-tells some classic stories, such as Goldilocks and the Three Yorkshire Bears and Snow White and the Cantankerous Yorkshire Mirror.

Tony's cartoons have appeared in publications including The Times, The Spectator and The Sun. Yobs, which he draws for Private Eye, is one of the best-known comic-strips in Britain.

"The visit by Ian and Tony was another example of the English department's innovative way of bringing the curriculum to life," Mrs Addison added.
