Poet's Performance Praised

Josh Horton gets into the performance, encouraged by Ian McMillan.

Popular and well known poet Ian McMillan engaged pupils at Healing School with his sharp wit and amusing style.

The Barnsley Bard, who has a weekly show The Verb on BBC Radio Three and is a regular contributor to television and radio, was joined by award-winning cartoonist Tony Husband.

Leigh Hirst (Head of English and Performing Arts) said: "We always look forward to Ian visiting."

"We know he's going to engage with our pupils and bring words to life. He didn't disappoint this year and gave a memorable performance, typically full of energy."

"Tony's cartoons are superb and added to a special event for all involved."

Principal Mark Knapton said the feedback from the visit had been very positive.

"Our outstanding English department is always looking for innovative ways to teach the curriculum," he said.

"Ian is popular for a reason and he demonstrated why when he came into the school. The staff, as well as the pupils, look forward to his visits."

Ian has published a number of books while Tony's cartoons have appeared in publications including The Times, The Spectator, The Sun and Private Eye.
