A Healing pupil is following in the shoes of Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton and building a growing reputation in the karting world.

Charlotte Fox (12) was shortlisted for the 'Female Driver of the Year' award by national publication Karting Magazine.

The Healing School pupil is tutored by renowned racing instructor Jock Clear, who has worked as senior performance engineer for Hamilton and former Formula One champion Michael Schumacher.

Charlotte met Hamilton - who started racing in karts and became British champion - at Whilton Mill race track in Northamptonshire, where she is taught by Clear most weekends.

The Year 8 pupil from Great Coates describes the sport as nerve wracking but exciting and loves to compete.

"My friends are really encouraging," she said.

"They think it is good that I am a girl competing in this type of sport. I don't know what the future holds, but I intend to progress and would like to be a professional motor racer when I grow up.

"It was a surprise to meet Lewis Hamilton who's my sporting hero. He was great and happy to pose for a selfie."

She was delighted to have been nominated in the Karting World competition, coming sixth out of 19 racers.

Charlotte is learning to drive a car and has been encouraged by her dad Lee Fox.

She said: "I come from a family that is very interested in motor sports."

"When I was little, I used to go to the track to watch my cousin racing. I was inspired and my dad encouraged me to get involved.

"I began racing when I was six. I am looking forward to being able to race cars when I turn 14."

Charlotte's younger sister Harriet , who is seven, has also started racing. Their mum is Claire Taylor.
